Depuis l'an 2000, les nanotechnologies et, plus précisément, leur convergence avec d'autres technologies de pointe suscitent une effervescence de la part des milieux de la recherche comme du grand public et des ministères. Partout, l'on entend parler de nanotubes, de laboratoires sur puces, de médicaments vectorisés, d'implants, etc. , et l'on s'interroge sur leurs implications. Pour ne pas répéter l'expérience malheureuse des OGM, la recherche en bio- et nanotechnologies est accompagnée par une recherche en amont sur leurs impacts sociaux, éthiques et culturels.
